Basic research is vital to the advancement of society, and should not be cut from the federal budget. Technical applications that create national wealth and improve lives can only come only come with a foundation of basic research. International research collaboration must also be maintained.

Government funding of research and development

Article Abstract:

May's argument that the United Kingdom has the most cost-effective science base of all G7 countries is flawed. It does not allow for a time lapse between research and development spending and evaluation of scientific impact. May concedes that his 'output/input' measurements are rough.

Article Abstract:

Scientific output among various nations is compared both in absolute numbers and relative to country size. Further analysis reveals comparative advantages among countries in specific areas such as chemistry and physics.
