Scoping out the planet

Article Abstract:

EarthScope will measure the movement and deformation of the earth below the contiguous US and Alaska with a level of detail and data accessibility never seen in geophysics. Earthscope will provide a new source of data for the next decade and by the year 2008 Earthscope's web of instruments will provide public data for geoscience.

Rebuilding a volcano: Mount St. Helens may be patching in its 1980 crater

Article Abstract:

Mount St. Helens might not have explosively erupted however the volcano is slowly throwing up lava that might ultimately fill its crater that formed after the blowout of May 18, 1980. It is believed that this mountain is just rebuilding itself and is acting the same way like Bezymianny volcano in Kamchatka, Russia.

Storm spotting: a step closer to forecasting disruptive solar activity

Article Abstract:

Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are flares erupting from the surface of the sun and consists of clouds with tones of energetic protons and electrons. Researchers launched the Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI) to track the CMEs through space and time.
