Selectivity in neurotrophin signaling: theme and variations

Article Abstract:

An introduction of neurotrophins, that are a family of growth factors critical for the development and functioning of the nervous system is given. In addition, studies indicate that the nature of the signaling cascades activated by neurotrophins, and the biological responses that result, are specified not only by the ligand itself, but also by the temporal pattern and spatial location of stimulation.

Breathing: rhythmcity, plasticity, chemosensitivity

Article Abstract:

Breathing is a vital behavior that is particularly amenable to experimental investigation and hence the progress on three problems regarding breathing is reviewed. It is shown that neurons with appropriate chemosensitivity are spread throughout the brainstem.
