Senate raps NASA on cost overruns: space station

Article Abstract:

John McCain, chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, has threatened NASA with an annual cost cap on the $30 billion international space station. He was reacting to the rapidly shrinking contingency fund for the project, a result of growing US contractor overruns totalling $300 million thus far.

Earthly politics boosts space probe

Stanford University lobbyist Francis Everitt's efforts have thus far kept the Gravity Probe-B (GPB) program alive, but the general relativity space probe faces another round of NASA budget reviews in 1995. GPB opponents claim that its scientific need is not acute and that its cost is too high.

Space scientists find fiscal relief

Article Abstract:

Pres Clinton revised his budget proposal to register a decline to $13.2 billion in the year 200 instead of $11.6, due to a lobbying effort by Vice Pres Al Gore. The agency will receive $2 billion per year to spend on space sciences.
