Shelter from the storm

Article Abstract:

Small municipalities must apply for a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination Systempermit if they are going to discharge pollutants from their storm-water systems. The small municipalities were originally exempted from phase 1 regulations of the Clean Water Act so that critical discharge problems could beattended to. The costs associated with getting the permits can be enormous for small municipalities. But progams that control pollution of storm-water runoff at the source rather than at the end can reduce permit application costs.

Above par storm-water management

Article Abstract:

Storm-water-treatment wetlands are shallow ecosystems created to enhance storm-water quality. The interaction of plants and microorganism in these wetlands eliminate pollutants like pesticides, metals, and sediments. These wetlands can be also aesthetically integrated into developments as part of the landscaping or the drainage system. Their application in golf courses show a 90% reduction in pollutants and 95% removal of suspended solids.
