Shrinking violet

Article Abstract:

Least bitterns come to Canada in mid-May and stay until September, when they leave again in search of fresh wetlands. They prefer cattail marshes on lake or river borders. Their population is diminishing as wetlands are being utilized for other purposes, prompting the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada to designate them as a threatened species in 1988.
