Conquering the cold

Article Abstract:

The construction of an airport, a hydroelectric facility and rural sanitation facilities in Alaska are described in order to illustrate the challenges faced by engineers in completing construction projects in Alaska's harsh environment. For one, a frozen layer of soil called permafrost, lies beneath half of the state's 591,000 sq mi area. Engineers have to take into account thermal losses to prevent thawing and degrading the permafrost. Construction work can only be done during four months every year while electricity and running water are not yet available in most communities.

Blowing hot and cold

Article Abstract:

Car air conditioning in Europe is expected to increase from 3.16 million units in 1994 to 7.1 million units by 2000 as motorists become more aware of its advantages. Air conditioning is particularly useful in hot and humid climate. However, it is also helpful in the damp and cold climate of the UK. Engineers at Ford Climate Control Operations chose the scroll-type compressor for European cars because of the efficiency required by the European vehicles which are smaller than their North American counterparts.

Warming up to cold calling

Article Abstract:

Cold calls on prospective clients should be kept short and be confined to four steps. Those doing cold calls should state their names and those of their firms. They should briefly describe their companies' business and ask for an appointment. The date, time and location are set when potential clients give a positive response. What should be said during cold calls must be planned and written beforehand. This is to avoid stammering over words since calling persons for the first time can cause anxiety.
