Message from the comet

Article Abstract:

Scientific phenomena, such as the visit of the comet Hale-Bopp, should serve as a reminder to people to reserve some time for exploring activities that involve science and aesthetics. Men should learn to pay homage to the wonders of nature that are normally taken for granted, including booming thunderstorms, meteor showers or a heavy snowfall. For all their naturalness, these events can serve as rewarding paths of inquiry into science or aesthetics even as they can also serve as shared connections with which humans can communicate a little more with one another.

A message to Congress

Article Abstract:

Technological innovation in the US is like a delicately balanced ecosystem. The government needs to support it to maintain a technological environment that is conducive to competition and progress. In doing so, it preserves private industries and public interests that are very much dependent on technological innovation, which is an important factor in economic expansion. Contrary to what the 104th Congress had done, the 105th Congress needs to encourage joint projects between companies and universities, and the national laboratories.

The medium is only half the message

Article Abstract:

Technical resolution and emotional resolution are both needed in creating good films. Technical resolution measures aspects of a film such as frame rate, spatial resolution, brightness and dynamic range. The director of photography is responsible for these measurements in moviemaking. Emotional resolution refers to the ability to use technology in conveying messages. This aspect of filmmaking measures the effectiveness of writers and film directors in communicating.
