Small worlds

Article Abstract:

Nanotechnology, which has many applications, was first postulated by Eric Dexler in the late 1970s and was predicted by Richard Feynman in a speech in 1959. The Space Vacuum Epitaxy Centre in Houston creates thin film materials and devices for commercial application. Researchers at Northwestern University, discovered encapsulated nanoparticles useful for magnetic resonance imaging, anti-cancer therapy and cell seperations. Charles Owens at the Institute of Design in Chicago has invented the concept of nanoplastics to alter product design for the home.

People movers

Article Abstract:

Human-powered vehicles (HPVs) are being developed on an international scale for air, water and land transportation and competition. Recumbent bicycles have been made by Norfolk-based engineer Mike Burrows as faster alternatives to their traditional counterparts. These bicycles and other land-based HPVs have integrated principles in aerodynamics, structures, materials and the human body, which serves as the engine. Competitions are helping to spur further research and innovation into HPVs.

Verging on success

Article Abstract:

The success of Virgin Rail's West Coast Main Line will depend upon the engineering design and production process of the high speed tilting trains. GEC Alsthom and Fiat won the contract to design, construct, supply and maintain the 54 trains for the rail line. The rail line is expected to be operational by year 2001 and the three companies involved are pressured to deliver the trains and subsequently meet expectations.
