Director Rita R. Colwell has allocated some $3.5 billion to support NSF's non-biomedical research programs. As the first woman to hold the top post of the agency, Colwell further plans to underscore the improvement of information technology, while emphasizing on ecological protection.

The Superconducting Super Collider project is under attack because critics think the huge expense will take away from lesser research projects. Some experts also want to close the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and wait until the budget allows for the building of a new center.

Testing, testing: unusual proteins could improve cancer diagnosis and reduce deaths

Article Abstract:

Matritech has developed a new, more accurate technique for diagnosing bladder cancer. The test, called NMP22, measures the amount of nuclear matrix protein in urine, which occurs in unusually high amounts in bladder cancer patients.
