Soil nail launcher strengthens road embankments

Article Abstract:

The features of the soil nail launcher, used by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) for strengthening a series of embankments so as to prevent danger slides, are discussed. The device was developed by the British military for deploying containers for nerve gas, and was converted for soil stabilization purposes in the 1980s.

Google mapping software gives engineers the earth

Article Abstract:

The features of Earth Pro, a software package from Google, are discussed. It provides help to engineers to read digital maps taken from aerial photographs and satellite imagery. It also provides access to central database containing an estimated 15 tetrabytes of geospatial data collected by third-party providers.

Forensic engineering: internal erosion doomed New York dam, study concludes

Article Abstract:

The details pertaining to the reconstruction of the Hadlock Pond Dam, in Fort Ann, New York, which has failed suddenly on July 2nd, 2005, are presented. The failure was investigated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), an agency which overlooks dam safety.
