Soothing the inflamed brain: antiinflammatories may be the first drugs to halt the progression of Alzheimer's

Article Abstract:

Researchers Patrick and Edith McGeer, both in their 70's, believe antiinflammatory drugs like dapsone may delay the progression of Alzheimer's disease. The accumulation of beta-amyloid and other substances in the brain induces an inflammatory immune process that destroys healthy brain cells. Dapsone will enter the second stage of clinical trials in late 2000, as early research has been promising.
