Determination of perchlorate in tobacco plants and tobacco products

Article Abstract:

Fertilized tobacco plant tissues and tobacco products are tested with ion chromatography (IC), capillary electrophoresis (CE), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy for perchlorate accumulation rate and spectral identification. High levels of perchlorate in tobacco plants and tobacco products could indicate the uptake of the chemical from fertilizer application, (and possible phytoremediation) but a direct link for the presence of perchlorate in consumer products is dismissed due to the long manufacturing process.

Stable nitrogen isotopes in waterfowl feathers reflect agricultural land use in western Canada

Article Abstract:

Feathers from flightless mallard ducklings are sampled across western Canada for nitrogen levels. High levels of anthropogenic nitrogen are associated with areas of greater agricultural activity.
