Preparing to breathe alone

Article Abstract:

It can be difficult to remove ventilatory support from a patient who has relied on the support for a long time. Health professionals involved in the patient's care should cooperate to establish the assessment procedures to be undertaken before the process of weaning the patient off ventilatory support can begin. The patient's respiratory system must be capable of oxygenation, carbon dioxide removal and mechanical function. It may also be advisable to calculate the work of breathing and airway occlusion pressure to assess weaning ability.
