'Strategic research' wins the day

Article Abstract:

The NSF has developed a new budget in keeping with a mandate from Congress. In 1993, the funding from NSF will be directed towards strategic research with about $100 million more than in 1992. These areas focus on national industrial and economic priorities.

SSC deathwatch starts again

Article Abstract:

The House of Representatives may vote to discontinue the SSC project due to an increase in estimates of construction costs to over $11 billion and to lack of international involvement. Supporters are working to get the Senate to save the project.

NSF wins, NIH loses in Clinton's 1994 budget

Article Abstract:

Pres Clinton requested a 16% increase in the FY 1994 NSF budget but only a 3.3% increase for NIH. The request is not expected to get easy approval from Congress. Highlight of the NSF budget proposals are presented.
