Advances in ultra-short-pulse laser methods may provide an opportunity to study states of chiral molecules that are similar to achiral stationary states. In addition, the microscopic process that degrades the 'stationary' achiral states and stabilize the handed states could be observed.

Article Abstract:

Several attempts have been made to obtain polar order from achiral molecules. Research findings presented in 1996 showed evidence of ferroelectric switching in a layered liquid-crystalline phase that consisted of achiral bent-core molecules.
