Machining performance of PM material containing MnX additives

Article Abstract:

Research evaluates the machining performance of a new powder metallurgy material, MnX along with three other conventional materials. Test data reveal that the new material performed superiorly in terms of cutting forces, tool wear, and surface finish especially at higher cutting speeds.

Through-tool coolant drilling of aluminum/SiC metal matrix composite

Article Abstract:

Research describes the usage of titanium nitride coated solid carbide drills to evaluate through-tool coolant drilling of aluminum/silicon carbide metal matrix composite materials. Data indicate that the technique is superior in terms of tool wear, cutting forces, surface finish, and burr heights compared to conventional coolant or dry drilling.

Surface modification of powder metallurgy components with a direct diode laser

Article Abstract:

A 1200 W diode laser is used to modify the surface properties of a fully sintered powder metallurgy material and the two modifications, transformation hardening of selected areas and sealing of surface porosity by re-melting, are investigated. Processed samples are examined using metallographic and hardness testing techniques and the results indicate that hardness comparable to induction hardening could be achieved and remelting could be controlled to seal porosity.
