Surplus promotes price competition

Article Abstract:

The surplus of engineers and engineering firms is seen as a disease plaguing the engineering profession. The excessive price competition, lower fees and profits, below average salaries and low quality of work output are considered as the symptoms of this condition. This has resulted in engineering negligence due to errors, omissions or poor procedures as quality control becomes more expensive. This situation is aggravated by the increasing efficiency of engineering firms. Engineering societies themselves can solve these problems bybecoming unselfish in considering the individual engineer.

Are there benefits to continuing professional development?

Article Abstract:

The concept of continuing professional development (CPD) has become a controversial issue, as a number of state governments mandate continuing education for maintaining professional engineering licensure. Most of the professionals consider continuing education as beneficial, but object to making it a requirement for professional licensure. The reasons supporting the introduction of the concept are related to updating with new ideas in the field of engineering, the legal liability of engineers and professional responsibility.

Gaining ground

Article Abstract:

A prominent geotechnical engineer reflects on his career and discusses the changing face in the field. He believes that education, litigation and mergers and acquisitions are factors that will greatly affect the future of technical engineering. He claims that the geotechnical engineering curricula lacks more adept educators. Moreover, improvements in the geotechnical engineering practice is undermined by fear of being sued.
