Sustainability: another new paradigm

Article Abstract:

The proposed eighth canon, in the ASCE Code of Ethics dealing with sustainable development, serves as an alternative paradigm for the civil engineering profession. It lacks any buzzwords and is the best available change to be added to the Code of Ethics. The ASCE Task Committee on Appropriate technology give significant importance to sustainability to the profession and the world. The proposed canon encourages an ethical examination of sustaining resources during civil engineering practice.

Stairway to sustainability

Article Abstract:

The rice terraces of the Ifugao people provide a long-term example of sustainable agriculture. Located in the northern region of the Philippines, the terraces feature ditch-system irrigation, crop rotation with other vegetation and many different rice varieties. These practices prevent erosion and preserve soil fertility. However, an increasing interest in urban employment has reduced the number of farmers to work the terraces.
