Creating a model to recycle solid waste

Article Abstract:

The Waste Processing and Recycling Plant at Sta Maria, 30 miles north of Manila, Philippines, serves as a model for the entire country. The facility, operated by Associated Waste Administration and Recycling Enterprise, takes residuals sorted by vendors and employees before collection in the public market. Collected organics are shredded before being transported to the plant. Incoming organics are alternately layered with burned rice hulls or sawdust in open heaps and mixed with compost fungus activator. The heaps are composted for 30 days, and the compost is then screened and turned regularly for four days to permit further aeration.
