TMDL at the crossroads

Article Abstract:

Many bodies of water in the United States don't meet the water standards set in the 1972 Clean Water Act. Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) was developed to address water standards by having 20,000 bodies of water across the nation have 40,000 TMDL assessments done by the EPA over the next 10-15 years. A TMDL calculates how many pollutants a body of water can have and still qualify for set water quality standards.

This is why water from the faucet tastes a little funny and my mom is always spending extra money on bottled water. The governor's of each state and Barack Obama should come together in unity to find a good, solid solution to this problem so that everyone can feel safe drinking water from the faucet.

Scientific evidence does not support TRI lead requirement, critics say

Article Abstract:

The lead industry believes that the EPA's proposal to lower the lead reporting threshold under the Toxics Release Inventory is not based on sound research. The industry noted that the lead levels in children's blood have decreased since lead was phased out of gasoline and banned from paint. However, EPA believes that the threshold needs to be addressed because lead remains an environmental hazard.

Smarter monitoring

Article Abstract:

The total maximum daily load process used by state environmental agencies to monitor water quality is described as an inadequate testing system. Lack of funding and natural oxygen depletion in waters causes skewed results.
