Tackling trapped sediments

Article Abstract:

The Army Corps of Engineers is eyeing crater-sink fluidization as a possible solution to Southern California's beach erosion problem. This method can help replenish the sand supply without endangering the environment. The best option will depend on sediment extraction methods, transportation from the reservoirs to the beaches and distribution within the erosion areas. The crater-sink fluidization system will facilitate operations, reduce labor costs and eliminate toxic and anaerobic bacteria accumulations.

Water pipelines: tackling toxics

Article Abstract:

Coal-tar enamel-coated steel pipes were found to leach toxic chemicals in the residential water supply of Girwood, AK. Tests were performed, and suggestions were made to remedy the situation. Pipe looping, pipe relining and water treatment were considered, but the water supply's owner chose to install flushing valves at the pipes' ends. The lines were flushed for about a month and the amount of perchloroethylene concentration fell below 2 ppb.

Controlling nitrogen in coastal waters

Article Abstract:

Excess nitrogen is causing the depletion of nutrients in coastal waters worldwide. Ways of controlling this nitrogen loading are presently being studied by New England state and local agencies with some help from the EPA. Various solutions, ranging from biological nitrogen removal at sewage treatment plants and retrofitting existing septic tanks to more enlightened zoning laws, are suggested to control the flow of nitrogen to coastal waters.
