Taking flight to the regions: Regional Development Agencies look set to play a major part in enhancing business between SMEs and the aerospace industry in many localized areas

Article Abstract:

The Society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC) wants greater recognition of the role of the aerospace industry in plans being developed by the regional Development Agencies (RDA). The SBAC and the National Aerospace Forum are working to raise the profile of the industry and create initiatives to improve competitive edge. The aerospace industry in the UK employs more than 121,000 people directly, and British companies have 12.5% of the world market for aerospace products. The industry is located in distinct clusters around the country and the SBAC has suggested that national and regional networks be created to foster development and dissemination of best business and manufacturing practices.

Article Abstract:

Significant progress has been made in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), 30 years after the release of the futuristic film '2001' which envisaged the coming of the intelligent computer. Despite several projects in corporate industrial research centers and academic institutions, there are relatively few examples of practical manufacturing applications. However, the increasing affordability and power of computers make it possible to develop further uses of AI in manufacturing processes.

Rover's returns

Article Abstract:

Rover Group PLC's has selected 64 suppliers as recipients of its Supplier Excellence Awards for 1997. The suppliers were recognized for criteria such as continuous upgrading of facilities, product quality and the ability to meet Rover's demands. Gold award winners include Allevard Springs for its role in helping Rover reduce costs and the Johnson Matthey Catalytic Systems Division which achieved a zero defect rate.
