Testing water quality fo pesticide pollution; U.S. Geological Survey investigations reveal widespread contamination of the nation's water resources

Article Abstract:

In 1991 Congress directed the U.S. Geological Survey to begin the National Water Quality Assessment Program. USGS has now published information that shows that pesticides are widespread in streams and groundwater and that there is a a high potential for pesticides to impact aquatic life. The second phase of the investigations will be completed in 1999 and the third phase in 2002.

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofuran contamination at metal recovery facilities, open burn sites, and a railroad car incineration facility

Article Abstract:

Soil and ash samples from a metal recovery facility, an open burn site and a railroad car incineration facility, were analyzed to determine the level of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (PCDD) and dibenzofuran (PCDF) contamination. The results showed that PCDD and PCDF concentrations in all three sites were low, especially in the railroad car incineration facility.
