The Orwell Awards: in recognition of efforts to trample personal liberties on the electronic frontier

Article Abstract:

Privacy International gave an Orwell Award to the Federal Aviation Administration, "honoring" the agency's proposed whole-body x-ray airport scanner as the Worst Single Project to threaten privacy. The internet advertising company DoubleClick was named Worst Corporate Offender for a plan to link internet surfing data from 50 million Web users to a marketing database.

Who wants privacy?

Privacy on the Internet has become a hot issue with restrictions being placed on the export of encryption software by the US government. The actions being taken within the marketplace to ensure the security of information is analyzed.

Completing the circuit

Article Abstract:

Lynn Conway helped develop techniques for the development of very large scale integration of integrated circuitry in the 1970s and 1980s. Conway enjoyed a successful career even after she underwent a sex change and became a woman. She is continuing her research as a professor at University of Michigan.
