The benefits of natural disasters

Article Abstract:

Suppression of natural disasters can have unintended effects on the natural ecosystem. Research on the effects of controlling floods on the steelhead trout and the effects of disrupting natural fire cycles indicates that preserving the forces in an ecosystem is necessary to preserve biodiversity.

Nitrogen oxide pollution may spark seeds' growth

Article Abstract:

Ecologists have discovered the compound in smoke that triggers the germination of plants after wildfires. Nitrogen oxide produced by wildfires can cause the germination of Yellow Whispering Bells, a common California wildflower. Air pollution may also trigger germination.

After the end: recovery from extinction

Article Abstract:

Marine and terrestrial communities recovered rapidly after the mass extinctions of the late Cretaceous period. Of the four regions that are studied, the Gulf Coast of North America appears to have rebounded most quickly.
