The breadfruit caper

Article Abstract:

The interest of botanists in London, England, in the 1700s for the Malaysian breadfruit led to the sending of Lt. Wm. Blight to Tahiti on Oct 4, 1787, to get seedlings fortransport to the West Indies. The mutiny staged by Blight's crewmen resulted inthe dumping of the seedlings in the high seas.

A brief overview of the historical voyages of Christopher Columbus and the search for spices that led to his accidental discovery of the Americas is discussed. The methods he used in charting his travels were based on pure guesswork.

Ornithologists collected bird specimens in the 19th century, sometimes destroying a species in the name of science. In the 20th century, ornithology has changed from collecting birds to watching them.
