The earth summit: we need more than a message

Article Abstract:

Promoters of the Earth Summit have promised a landmark planet-saving agreement, but the sponsoring body, the United Nations, is an outdated, underfunded and impotent body that has no power to carry out mandates or ensure compliance. The organization was set up for political mediation and exchange of information and not to challenge sovereign states to follow a global agenda. An overhauled or updated UN, still based on anachronistic perceptions of sovereignty, is not what is needed. It is time for a new international structure with the power to take action on global problems such as the environment.

Lessons for UNCED '92: a consortium of universities looks at the big picture

Article Abstract:

Duke University, North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina have formed a consortium, the Center for World Environment and Sustainable Development, to provide the interdisciplinary training needed to tackle global problems. Modern academic training become increasingly specialized due to the overwhelming volume of scientific knowledge and the requirements of the job market. A holistic knowledge of political, economic, and environmental realities and their interrelations will be necessary to develop and carry through policies relating to the Earth Summit's agenda.

Mobilizing international science

Article Abstract:

The International Council of Scientific Unions held a conference entitled 'Agenda of Science for Environment and Development into the 21st Century' (ASCEND-21) to determine the contribution the union would make as scientific advisor to the 1992 Earth Summit. ASCEND-21 recommended international research on the total Earth ecosystem and on ways to reduce population growth and overconsumption. Special efforts in education, greater societal involvement in environmental and development concerns and partnerships between scientists, development agencies and policy makers were also urged.
