The emergence of treatment wetlands

Article Abstract:

A federal interagency work group composed of researchers and regulators is monitoring the effectivity and acceptability of a wastewater treatment method using wetlands. The natural treatment is considered to be inexpensive, requiring minimal maintenance costs. The "subsurface flow" system, which allows wastewater to flow naturally beneath a surface of a gravel-rock bed, is widely-accepted in Europe. The marsh-type "surface flow" has not yet gained national regulatory acceptance. Wastewater treatment projects of this type are approved on a case-by-case basis. The group aims to develop national guidelines for this new technology.

Lung damage linked to combined fine-particle, ozone exposure in new toxicology study

Article Abstract:

A new report by toxicologist Michael T. Kleinman suggests that long-term exposure to particulate matter (PM) and other air pollutants may reduce the life expectancy of humans. In his study of the effects of PM and ozone on healthy rats, rats that were exposed longer to ozone and PM were susceptible to lung injury due to higher rates of cell damage. An autopsy of the rat lungs showed a large increase in toxicity when all the components of ozone and PM were present, suggesting that a combination of factors underlie the deleterious effects of PM and ozone on health.

White House studies U.S. environmental technology industry, R&D

Article Abstract:

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) has nearly completed two studies of US environmental technology companies. The OSTP plans to use the studies to support those firms. The studies investigated companies with effective environmental research and support programs as well as firms dealing with pollution prevention, monitoring, control, remediation and energy. Responses from the companies will be used to align government resources towards further development of these industries.
