The genome program's conscience: a research program on the ethical, legal, and social implications of genome studies, launched as an "afterthought," is now the world's biggest bioethics program

Article Abstract:

Top ethicists, geneticists and genome program officials disagree about the level of success attained by NHI's program to determine the ethical, legal, social implications (ESLI) of the Human Genome Project. One accomplishment is proposed legislation to protect people from genetic discrimination.

Policy on DNA research troubles tissue bankers

Article Abstract:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has blocked DNA research on its 17,000 DNA samples as it determines if the blood was obtained with an appropriate degree of patient consent. Tissue banks are concerned that the CDC's standards will be too high for other institutions to meet.

Is data-hoarding slowing the assault on pathogens?

Article Abstract:

Many academic genome researchers have agreements with for-profit partners to delay dissemination of research findings until their profit potential is assessed. Opponents of such policies argue that delay causes duplicated effort and waste.
