The purchase of knowledge: James Edward Smith and the Linnean collections

Article Abstract:

James Edward Smith's purchase of the Linnean collections in 1784 led to the establishment of the Linnean system in Britain, UK, and the Linnean Society of London, UK. The collection was acquired by Smith through the help of his merchant-manufacturer father, James Smith. The Linnean collections also helped establish Smith as a leading collector, connoisseur and patron of learning. However, Smith was criticized by some people of passing of the property of Linnaeus and of other botanists as his own.

Doing the knowledge

Article Abstract:

ICAD's knowledge-based engineering software helps Lucas Aerospace to design components rapidly and reliably. A pilot project has reduced the time to design gearboxes from three man-weeks to less than a day. Engineers design critical components, which determine routine ones that the software then designs. It automatically calculates stresses, selects components from on-line catalogs, and analyzes weights and projected material life-spans.
