The crime can be hazardous to the health of amateur smugglers, and the nuclear material can be obtained for terrorist purposes by groups or by undesirable nations. The threat is very direct and should be prevented.

Nuclear rockets will be used for powering spacecraft to explore the other planets of the solar system. This would reduce travel time by more than half compared to chemical rockets. Also, since it uses hydrogen as propellant, spacecraft can replenish hydrogen supply from the giant planets.
