The road forward

Article Abstract:

The UK's automotive industry is undergoing major technical and structural changes. The vehicle manufacturers and component suppliers are working in closer coordination, enabling R&D cost reductions. The possibility of standardization of designs and quality systems increases. System integration and modularization techniques are beneficial in terms of safety, reliability, environmental protection, expense, vehicle weight reduction and simplified manufacture and quality control. Manufacturers can also reduce the number of suppliers.

Forging the link

Article Abstract:

The Metrolink system in Northridge, CA was upgraded after the earthquake in 1994 and this new system has improved technology that allows for the higher operating speeds of the train. The signal system has also been improved to get better control in the operation of the train on the existing track. These measures help reduce travel time. The postquake recovery system is getting momentum from this new Metrolink system. This Metrolink system is the sixth largest commuter rail system in the US.

Cable-stayed crossing creates road link over Suez Canal

Article Abstract:

A team of Japanese engineering companies and Egyptian contractors is constructing a long cable-stayed bridge over the Suez Canal to create a new crossing for the waterway. The bridge, which will be opened to traffic in 2001, will link El-Ferdan with Ismailia. It will also incorporate a couple of reinforced concrete pylons molded like ancient Egyptian obelisks. These will be placed on cast-in-place concrete piles.
