Wildland fire

Article Abstract:

A firefighter narrates his experiences in putting out forest fires in central Florida which started around Memorial Day of 1998. A long dry spell and low relative humidity conspired to create one of the worst fire conditions seen in the state for the last 50 years. The fires destroyed more than 355 homes and businesses as well as half a million acres of wildland before they were controlled by sustained rain in early Jul 1998. A combination of ineffective laws and policies, budgetary constraints and public opposition to prescribed burning contributed to the accumulation of dangerous high fuel loads in the forest lands.

The dominion of fire

Article Abstract:

Fire has been used by mankind since time immemorial for every conceivable purpose such that human life is impossible without fire. The history of fire can be seen as a form of competition between various forms of anthropogenic fire. In some cases, this involved changes in the technology of making fire, or the loss of fire practices through the migration of people. Fire had a significant influence on the relationship between people and the world. It gave light and heat, redefined social roles, paved the way for cooking and served as a supplement to the ax, knife and drill of primitive man.

Fire in the interface

Article Abstract:

Lincoln National Forest, where two mid-sized communities and the Mescalero Apache Indian reservation can be found, has been rated as one of the places where wildfires could start. Forestry officials say it is only a matter of time before a destructive fire could start. Lincoln National Forest personnel are conducting fire prevention and protection education to cope with the threat of forest fires. They are also developing a five-year plan designed to address the need for prescribed and managed natural fire.
