The strategy for human resources development in SMI

Article Abstract:

Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd. (SMI) recognizes human resource development as an important factor in increasing international competitiveness. SMI has training programs for white collar and blue collar workers that are designed to maximize productivity. The educational programs of the company features practical education using state-of-the art practice equipment, consistent training by full time instructors, the maintenance of teaching materials to conform with actual production work, the education of 'nucleus' employees at each worksite and a follow-up survey of trainees' achievements.

Motivating technical employees

Article Abstract:

New theories on worker motivation show that management-employee communications and career growth opportunites arecritical factors in the workplace. These apply especially to engineers who alsolook for encouragement and acknowledgement of their efforts. Managers need to review their leadership styles and adopt a more flexible attitude in dealing with different situations. They should ensure that the corporate leadership promotes integrity and positive values and stems from a sincere desire to take care of, empower and motivate employees.
