The war? program? experiment? on drugs

Article Abstract:

The Bush administration's new drug program should be viewed as an experiment rather than a program, allowing for a change in direction if the experiment does not succeed. Legalization of drugs may be the next logical step if the experiment fails. Fundamental flaws in the current drug policy include inadequate funding and a certain weakness despite its "get tough" rhetoric. Many claim commitment to eradication of the drug problem but no one offers to accept cuts in his own programs to provide needed funds, nor is a tax increase considered acceptable, despite an obvious lack of available monies. There should be continuous evaluation of the experiment's performance and willingness to change direction as needed, allowing it to evolve rather than simply failing or succeeding.
