Think thin

Article Abstract:

Close cooperation between Ford and GE Plastics resulted in the introduction of the thin wall bumper in the Ford Mondeo. GE Plastics' XENOY thermoplastic alloy was chosen based on specifications on processing, impact, chemical resistance, paint adhesion, cosmetics and weatherability. Aside from reducing costs by eliminating primer paint and cutting off 20% in material usage, cycle times were also minimized.

Showing your metal

Article Abstract:

Metal matrix composites face manufacturing and testing problems, limiting their immediate potential. They may offer greater strength, stiffness, and resistance to wear and fatigue, but little is known about their resistance to corrosion and longer-term stresses. Advanced Materials periodical and others recommend further testing, but manufacturers warn that further delays could bankrupt them.
