Thought control: quality is a much about attitudes as procedures and systems

Article Abstract:

Quality involves meeting the needs of different quality management systems under the ISO9000 classification in most industrial sectors. Some engineers believe there are drawbacks to the current system, particularly in industries seeing rapid change, such as the electronics industry. Modern engineering companies require quality managers who are capable of talking to marketing, research, customers and regulatory bodies, as well as supporting site engineers.

Train of thought

Article Abstract:

The basic layout of passenger train coaches has changed little in over 100 years, although they are stronger, lighter and safer. Engineers at the University of Loughborough are studying the feasibility of active steering and suspension systems as part of an EU-funded research project on the 'Mechatronic Train'. It is hoped that replacing mechanical systems with electro-mechanical technology will result in cheaper, simpler and more efficient vehicles.

Pressing problems

Article Abstract:

BAe Systems, part of the consortium that is producing the Eurofighter, is extending the limits of tooling capabilities to meet the plane's exacting requirements. Techniques such as super-plastic forming are being used to enable engineers to produce complex components using few parts.
