Thyroid disease: a case of cell suicide?

Article Abstract:

A Italian research team believe they found a new disease in mechanism in at least one autoimmune disease, known as Hashimoto's thyroiditis. T cells, rather than killing the target cells, may trigger apoptosis by binding the molecule Fas and Fas ligand, causing the cells to kill themselves.

Slow start for Europe's new habitat protection plan

Article Abstract:

Spain and other members of the European Union have failed to comply with the EU's Habitat Directive that requires them to list the threatened habitats within their borders. Reasons for the failure range from insufficient scientific knowledge to conflicts with development.

Long-awaited R&D plan short on action

Scientists in Ireland are disappointed by a white paper on research and development plans released by the Irish government. The paper proposes establishing a new science policy, but it contains no promises to increase funding.
