Drive-by Motor Vehicle Emissions: Immediate Feedback in Reducing Air Pollution

Article Abstract:

The Smart Sign is an emissions information sign that gives the passing driver a "real time" display of emissions quality. It is a product development of the Intelligent Transportation System, a program of the DOT to improve air quality and energy efficiency. The Smart Sign is being operationally tested in Denver, Colorado. It is composed of five subsystems that allow the device to measure carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons of passing vehicles. The rating system of the sign is simply: Good/Fair/Poor; this set of qualitative measures was determined in focus groups[one of experts, two of drivers]. The point of the sign is to create a feedback message to the passing driver who takes independent and voluntary action to make smog repairs. It is estimated that 50% of the emissions are created by 10% of vehicles. The Smart Sign is a economically cheap investment that yields high results, costing $60,000 a year, at $.02 per test.

Time resolved characterization of diesel particulate emissions. 1. instrments for particle mass measurements

Article Abstract:

Results from the testing of five different methods for measuring diesel vehicle exhaust particulate mass emission shows that fast response measurements of diesel exhaust particulate mass concentrations, consistent with Code of Federal Regulations filter measurements, are feasible using existing technology.

Bottle-in-bag for gas sampling with analysis by autoheadspace GC

Article Abstract:

An innovation in gas sampling and analysis has been developed in the bottle-in-bag technique that has been proven to be accurate, effective and easy to use. The gas sampling technique relies on a headspace vial placed inside a sealable bag. Gas is pumped into the bag, and the headspace vial is closed through the bag. Subsequent samplings will use new bags and vials. The bottle-in-bag has been found to outperform the Tedlar bag and manual gas syringe gas collection methods.
