Total quality management in the construction industry: a preliminary analysis

Article Abstract:

The construction industry (CI) is still confused on the role of quality assurance (QA) and total quality management (TQM) in improving production. The results of a questionnaire on QA and TQM among leading construction companies in UK are discussed and compared with similar studies conducted in other industries. The major conclusions from the study are: the level of TQM advancement in the CI is low and is similar with other industries;the effective implementation of TQM principles in the CI is more complex; the recognition of the long-term nature of TQM is essential.

The use of quality management techniques and tools: an examination of some key issues

Article Abstract:

Quality management techniques and tools are often found to be ineffective mainly due to their improper application. Improper use of quality management techniques and tools results due to lack of management support as well as lack of understanding and discipline on the part of the user. In terms of management support, failure results when management is unable to take into consideration requirements needed in the use of the techniques and tools.
