Tunnelers probe policy ponder baseline reports

Article Abstract:

Participants of American Underground Association's conference in April 1996 discussed the benefits and means of constructing underground transport systems. Chief Engineer Jean-Paul Godard of the Paris Transportation Authority opines that subways minimize noise, pollution, congestion, and mishaps. Engineers should be politically active to alter the policies on underground transport. The engineers at a pre-conference meeting discussed geotechnical baseline reports. The American Society of Civil Engineers' Underground Technology Research Council will publish guidelines for the reports in 1997.

World of Concrete a winner in Vegas

Article Abstract:

The 1993 World of Concrete conference at the LasVegas Convention Center in Jan 24-29, 1993 featured exhibits about concrete applications while mnaufacturers staged presentations of placing, surface preparation and demolition outside the building. Meanwhile, the International Apprenticeship Competition called for masons to craete stairs, curbs and gutters while plasterers constructed complex cornice molds. The American Concrete Institute's concrete flatwork finishing training course and certification examination enabled participants to acquire professionally required skills.

Tunnelers eye safety and environmental regulations

Article Abstract:

More than 600 engineers and tunneling experts attended the biennial Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference held in San Francisco, CA. Experts spoke on several topics, including safety and environmental regulations related to their work. Featured speakers criticized environmental activists who advocated nature over engineering. Many speakers focused on various difficulties faced from nature during engineering projects, especially in the field of tunneling. They said environmental problems caused cost overruns and other hazards.
