Tunnels not immune to environmental concerns

Article Abstract:

The Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) at Boston in Jun 1993 was attended by 1,000 engineers and contractors who discussed the impact of tunneling on environment. The construction of a tunnel is faced with the problem of water seeping in and a segmental precast concrete initial lining and a cast-in place final lining is constructed to make it waterproof. The RETC sponsored by the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical & Petroleum Engineers and by ASCE discussed about tunnel building projects in Europe.
