UC Berkeley's computer science department assisted AT&T in the development of UNIX, which benefited the communications company financially. Some UC researchers are involved with Berkeley Software Design Inc, which offers similar software for PC users.

A close look at an active galaxy's engine

Astronomers using the reverberation mapping technique are observing the galaxy NGC 5548's active galactic nucleus (AGN). The observational data support the theory that AGNs are powered by black holes.
