U.S. joins "science shop" movement

Scientist Richard Sclove hopes to develop a Community Research Network in the US, a collection of organizations that would research issues of societal and community concern. The network would be based on the Netherlands' 'science shops,' which research issues ranging from teen alienation to air pollution.

Putting museumgoers in scientists' shoes

The Boston Science Museum's new Investigate! exhibit carries the hands-on concept of modern museums a step further by allowing visitors to fashion their own experiments, without furnishing answers or expected results. Experts have called it an accurate demonstration of the scientific method.

An "off switch" for red blood cells

Article Abstract:

Researchers have identified an area on the erythropoietin receptor (EPO-R) where a down-regulating enzyme binds to turn off the production of red blood cells in bone marrow. The enzyme is called Jak2, and it is separate from the EPO-R molecule.
