Unlimited light: researchers make pulses that travel faster than light - sort of

Article Abstract:

Physicists looking for what a pulse of light is or the ultimate speed of light found that a light pulse sent through a cell of laser-soaked cesium gas can produce the original pulse before the pulse completely travels through the cell. The pulse went through the cell faster because of an anomalous dispersion that changes the frequencies in the cell.

Dream machine: hopes for a giant collider lie in a worldwide appeal

Article Abstract:

Physicists plan to build an accelerator 30 kilometer long, which will help them to explore some answered questions in physics. The plan is to accelerate electrons and positrons down dual 15-kilometer pipe and smash them together inside a large detector, which will generate about one trillion electron volts of energy.

Speaking up for science

Article Abstract:

The Kansas debacle on teaching evolution and other gains by creationism are motivating scientists to increase their political activism. Although some scientists are reluctant to get involved, participation on the local level is vital to influencing public opinion on scientific issues.
