Vanadium as an integral marker to evaluate microbial degradation of crude oil

Article Abstract:

Investigation into the feasibility of using vanadium as an alternative internal marker in lieu of 17alpha,21beta -Hopane in monitoring the biodegradation of petroleum products showed that vanadium has similar properties with hopane especially in terms of its extractability in dichloromethane. This is seen in the congruence of vanadium concentration in various petroleum degradation products which compares well with hopane marked petroleum degradation tests.

Vanadium as an internal marker to evaluate microbial degradation of crude oil

Article Abstract:

A study investigated the properties of vanadium as used to internally mark and analyze the degradation caused in crude oil by microbes. Vanadium was found to be an effective alternative to hopane as an internal marker. The study was conducted in tanks which simulated the effects of a beach environment upon petroleum.
