Biomedical leaders are worried that opposition by AIDS activists to Harold Varmus' appointment as director of NIH will doom his chances. They are organizing a campaign in his support, although Clinton administration sources maintain that the appointment is certain.

Healy resigned on Feb 26, 1993 when she was informed that she would not be kept on at the NIH. She was controversial during her tenure and alienated many. Several congresswomen were angry at Healy's backing of the Bush administration's fetal tissue research ban.
