Virtuous circles and fragile states

Article Abstract:

A stable democracy in struggling nations like Liberia and Haiti could be promoted better by rich countries and international agencies by giving practical help instead of sending an endless stream of consultants to design projects that arrive too late. By thinking through the underlying ecological challenges facing a country-drought, poor crops, disease, and physical isolation-and raising the lot of the average household through quick-disbursing and well-targeted assistance, US foreign policy makers would provide an invaluable investment in democracy, development and US national security.

Fiddling while the planet burns

Article Abstract:

A July 14, 2006 editorial, 'Hockey Stick Hokum' is a graph first published in 1998 by Michael Mann et al. that attempted to reconstruct the mean surface temperature on the planet during the period A.D. 900 to the present. The study concluded that people are living in that intervals warmest range of temperatures, therefore adding support to the overwhelming evidence that man-made climate change is already well under way.
