Virus wins stay of execution

Article Abstract:

The World Health Organization has delayed a plan to destroy the last 600 remaining samples of variola, the smallpox virus, on Jun 30, 1995. Supporters of destruction maintain that an accidental escape could kill or blind 1 million people. Opponents argue the virus is valuable for research.

Controversial vaccine shows promise

Immunologist Manuel Patarroyo came under fire with the scientific community for flawed data on a malaria vaccine he tested in Colombia. A new article he is publishing in 'Lancet' shows more promising results, with malaria risk reduced in 39% of research subjects.

Malaria vaccine raises a dilemma

Article Abstract:

Many Western scientists remain skeptical over the effectivity of the first malaria vaccine, SPf66. The vaccine, which was chemically synthesized by Colombian physician and chemist Manuel Patarroyo, has been tested in over 30,000 volunteers in five countries.
